Local writers help combat illiteracy in rural Banten
By Ibnu Adam Aviciena - Inside Indonesia.org

Inspired by Banten’s past reputation as a centre for Islamic learning, a small group of citizens is tackling the high levels of rural illiteracy in this West Java province. They have established an organisation that hosts a library of thousands of books, conducts weekly discussions and runs writing classes. Some of the participants in these classes have written articles, stories and poems that have been published in local and national newspapers. Some have even gone on to write novels and screenplays. Every three months the group also publishes a book of poems, and this year it opened small libraries in a number of villages. Continue Reading »

PUTU WIJAYA, ATUT, HILMAN “LUPUS”, AND TIHAMI

ugas-2.jpgBy Langlang Randhawa/Tranlated by Wawan Husin

God the Mighty One, has created everything without any in vain at all. It means, when we are smart enough to get the blessing in disguise or even: wisdom in what has happened then there is no event or experience which has no meaning or learning within it. Learning is not “just” from what we get from school. Learning is more than that, learning from the past generations is also a component of the God’s parable. In a smaller coverage, Indonesia has lots of stories, folklore, folktales that can become an advice in one way or another. Especially for children who tendsto love stories, folktales instead of lecturing. Continue Reading »

dipanggung-2.jpgby Renhard Renn - translated by Wawan Husin

Days go week. Weeks go ,onths. July has passed and August comes into being. August a meaningful month for Indonesian people. Yes, it is the 17th of August, 1945 that history has recorded proclamation of the freedom of NKRI from the colonizers. It is on that very day that Indonesian people had cheerfully witnessed their founding fathers, Bung Hatta and Bung Karno, declared the national independence and freed the nation from the colonizers who had clutched the motherland for thee centuries and a half. BEING HAPPY ON THE CHILDREN DAY AND READING DOG-CART

balonwarna-2.jpgBy Langlang Randhawa - Translated by Wawan Husin

When various colors are moulded by able hands, a fascinated drawing is born. When tones are composed beautifully, beautiful charming songs are filling the air. When words are arranged full-heartedly, significant writings are born into being. A work of arts, in whatever forms, when they are faithfully following the branches of process, will be meaningful. The process will result in: the buds of painters, musicians, writers who will emerge from the Earth. The buds are our children. Embryos of all colors and varieties of songs of Life. TILL WE MEET AGAIN AT THE VILLAGE ODE 3 AND WELCOM TO THE CHILDREN PART

undanganya-2.jpgBy Muh Zen Den – Translated by Wawan Husin

No. I won’t die in a rush,
The drums have been beaten, the movement just began: not yet at the peak. (Toto ST Radik, Anthology “Puisi Pangeran” 2005)

It is just that! When we can interpret a line of words from Radik’s poem. The journey is so far away. Still far away. We haven’t finished. Just a beginning. A number of things have to be done. Not yet finished. We have just finished an execution of The Village Ode part 2: Literacy Gathering of Nusantara (July, 20-22, 2007) with –among others- resulted with the statement: (1) Rejecting arrogance and dominance of a community over another community; (2) rejecting sexual exploitation as aesthetics standard and (3) rejecting foreign aids that manipulates the Indonesian-ness of our culture. OPENING OF VILLAGE ODE 2: ENTHUSIASTIC

pakrtkurnia-3.jpgBy Gola Gong  - translated by Wawan Husin

Two scarecrows. Hay men of rice field were brought to public. The scarecrows are mindmastered by Bonang Purbaya, Fiday, July, 20,  2007 at the city yard of Serang municipality –whose yard is crowded by malls – and some members of Gesbica IAIN Serang and Kubah Budaya (the Culture Dom). At the same time,  Jack Lamota’s documentary film of the Village Ode 1 (2006): the meeting of writers, was on the screen, running. The aroma of the VO2 (July 20 – 22, 2007) got intensed.  And this is stronger when we drive out of the East Serang Tol. From the first cross-road a scarecrow welcome us, standing. Moving along on the junction of of Sudirman Road another scarecrow welcoming us. It waves on us right under the bridge, dominated by the capitalist billboards ads. The scarecrow invited people to drop at Rumah Dunia (the World Home) in Ciloang village where the gathering was executed. Continue Reading »

RUMAH DUNIA WRITING WORKSHOP

diskusi2.jpgBy Gola Gong - (Translated by Inda Duzih Pitkanen, Edited by Johan Kalevi Pitkanen)

A Writer should posess humility, and a would-be writer must learn how to possess this attitude. Yet, the fatal attitude for the would-be writer is the attitude of easily giving up in desparity. (Ismail Marahimin, How to write in popular, Pustaka Jaya, 1994)

THE GREAT HARVEST IN RUMAH DUNIA

gambarabt.jpgBy Gola Gong / Translated by Diday Tea

In every ends of the year, our neighborhood is surrounded by the smell from the flowers. There are mangoes tree in almost every house. In October the mangoes trees blossomed. In December mangoes hanged down on the trees, overripe asked to be caressed. And so is the tree of jambu air and the rambutan(name of fruits in Indonesia). I felt, if the trees were treated well, certainly they will repay the treatment giving so many fruits. From the trees I learned, that the tree not merely was the patron from the heat of the sun light and the street dust. But also they have other benefits; they gave the outstanding enjoyment, which is the gift of great deliciousness from that fruit, that, it was healthy for our body as well as our thoughts.
